Smartnav, founded by RAC Trafficmaster, is the most revolutionary navigation system to be released in recent years – sophisticated yet simple, discrete yet effective. Not only is it a navigation system but also a personal assistant able to book hotel rooms, provide traffic information and even call the emergency or breakdown services. Smartnav works like any other navigation system by using Global Positioning Satellites to determine the vehicle’s position, but also incorporates other features such as TMC, speed alerts and even stolen vehicle tracking.

Smartnav can be operated by two means. The simplest and most discrete is the Smartnav button, which, due to the simplicity allows it to be installed into virtually any vehicle. By pressing the button for a few seconds you are connected to an operator in the Trafficmaster control centre using GSM technology. The required destination can be given in many formats – postcode, street name , business name. The route is then calculated, taking into account live traffic information, and then downloaded into the vehicle. Upon commencing driving, Smartnav provides accurate voice guidance commands to direct the driver. There are no complicated programming or menu systems to try and understand.

The second method of operation is using the optional touch screen monitor , which further expands the capability and functionality of the system. The touch screen allows the user to enter the desination themselve’s, or still have the ability to speak to an operator. In addition, upon providing guidance, the screen will display current road name, exploded view of roundabouts/intersections clearly highlighting the designated route, as well as still providing voice guidance.

For an additional subscription charge it is possible to activate the speed camera alert system or indeed stolen vehicle tracking system similar to Rac Trackstar Plus.
