There
are a few options to enable iPod integration. In most cases, the
limiting factor is the car’s original equipment audio i.e.
some are easier than others – some can’t be done at all!
The ‘good, better, best’ scenarios are a bit like this;-
‘
Universal’ fm modulator (either Dension of Apple iTrip) convert
the iPod signal to an fm radio signal which can be played through any
radio tuned to the appropriate frequency.
(A fairly crude and inexpensive
solution,
but prone to interference and poorer quality.)
At this stage, with some cars you’re better replacing the OE
radio with something more iPod friendly. ALPINE have a few models with
great iPod features.
Next possibility is using the cd changer port on the car’s audio – this
needs a DENSION ice-link to convert this input. It allows the iPod
to be charged, gives audio signal, but you still have to control the
iPod itself. There is a cradle for the iPod on the dash. (Limitation
car be the car audio itself, so check with us first.)
Some vehicles have an auxiliary input which we can add a DENSION ice-link-lite
to. It allows the iPod to be charged, and retains the OE cd changer.
Currently available for some BMW 1 series E87, BMW 3-series E90, some
Ford 6000, Ford/Sony and SAAB 9-3.
An increasing number of cars use CAN-BUS processors to control almost
everything. Each processor takes on different functions as the car
requires it to. Integrating in to these OE systems can be challenging,
and not for the faint-hearted! We have a range of products from American
company NAV-TV, to allow us to interface to Mercedes, Porsche, BMW,
Bentley, VW, Range Rover.
